Students will examine how the research may position them and their courses and the relation of the research to the socio-political context in which it will be conducted. Students will explore the methodological knowledge and skills introduced in this course to generate and analyse both qualitative and quantitative research data and also be mindful of the ethical and political issues involved in educational research.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically appreciate and evaluate research in education
  • Apply two designated methods to generate and analyse qualitative data to address an intended research problem and critically reflect on the issues involved in data generation and data analysis
  • Develop an understanding of the quantitative research process from research questions to research reporting and be able to set up and run some basic quantitative analysis and interpret the results, using IT tools including SPSS/PSPP.
