Course overview
This course will deepen students' understanding of the nature of spoken and written language, its acquisition and use, and the implications for learning and teaching English within diverse socio-cultural and ethno-linguistic environments. Students will develop knowledge of learning English as an additional language, the relationship between language, culture and learning, and the intercultural orientation. The students will investigate the role of language in thinking and learning, the theories of second language acquisition, and the process and factors affecting the learning of an additional language. The students will also evaluate the relationship between learner background and language learning, the role of interaction and moving between languages and cultures, and the role of instruction in second language learning.

- Discuss what it means to know a language as social, cultural and intercultural practice
- Demonstrate understanding of the role of languages, cultures and learning and their relationship
- Critically evaluate how factors, including learner differences, background and life-world affect language learning
- Critique principles and practices for learning languages and cultures, and draw out their pedagogical implications
- Reflect on language and culture learning and teaching in diverse contexts
