Course overview
To explore and evaluate contemporary principles, approaches, content, pedagogies, resources and assessment practices for designing Religious Education programs and lessons. Catholic identity and mission, as they impact on Religious Education Curriculum design, will be considered and examined in dialogue with the realities of dynamic contemporary contexts. The course will develop understanding of cultural and religious contexts of students in the RE classroom. This course offers teachers in Catholic Schools opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and capabilities needed for designing curricula in Religious Education which can be transferred to other Learning Areas.
Course learning outcomes
- Explain the importance of context for the design of contemporary Religious Education curricula in Catholic Schools
- Articulate a philosophy for teaching and learning in the Religious Education learning area relevant to the contemporary Catholic School classroom
- Analyse and critique key elements in designing Religious Education curriculum
- Design and implement effective curricula in Religious Education (or in an integrated curriculum) consistent with an articulated philosophy of Religious Education, drawing on the Crossways Religious Education Curriculum and course perspectives
