Course overview

This course will examine theories, principles and philosophies of Islamic education as they inform Islamic pedagogy and evaluate the implications for diverse approaches to quality teaching and learning for Muslim students in contemporary classrooms. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the purpose of education and the nature of teaching within the broad parameters of Islamic worldview conversant of the broader contemporary education context. Students will develop a depth of knowledge and engagement with conceptual frameworks and metalanguage that inform teaching and learning within an Islamic pedagogy. Students will appreciate that an Islamic pedagogy is inclusive, filtering and enabling, not only of the diversity and fluidity of thought within the heritage of Muslim thinkers, but the needs of students and the growing body of evidenced based best practice. Students will apply their knowledge to the critical analysis of approaches to teaching and learning within an Islamic pedagogy that demonstrates their ability to effectively align assessment, curriculum and pedagogy for Muslim students.

Course learning outcomes

  • Recognise the origin, transmission and methodologies of Islam's great texts and analyse the impact on notions of knowledge in relation to Islamic thought, culture, identity and interconnectedness of civilisations
  • Explore and analyse the relationship of ontology and epistemology to conceptions of Islamic education
  • Critically compare and situate the philosophies of Islamic education in relation to contemporary approaches to education
  • Critically analyse theoretical perspectives that inform understandings of learning in Islamic education and within an Islamic pedagogy for application of best practice teaching of Muslim students
  • Explore and critically analyse perspectives on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment with consideration to alternative and Islamic worldviews, in context, and conversant of contemporary best practice
  • Apply understandings of an Islamic pedagogy to the alignment of assessment, curriculum (for example, Australian National curriculum (nominated Key Learning Area) and pedagogy within a key learning area
  • Examine assessment practices and curriculum development and mapping techniques and apply curriculum mapping tools for integrating, embedding and/or infusing Islamic worldview and Islamic perspectives across key learning areas and/or curriculum (for example, Australian National curriculum (nominated Key Learning Area)
