Course overview

This course engages students in critical analysis of contemporary inclusive and special education issues. Students apply responsive professional knowledge, dispositions and pedagogy through transdisciplinary collaboration with service providers to better understand how to cater for student diversity. Students will interpret and transmit knowledge of inclusive education, including education, health, disability, mental health and government/community agencies, to advance educator expertise in raising expectations, educational outcomes and quality of life for students with diverse needs.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate and interpret knowledge of research methods and principles appropriate to inclusive education and student diversity and communicate findings and concepts from research in relation to both theory and practice
  • Demonstrate and interpret key terminology, concepts, roles and service models in inclusive education both nationally and internationally
  • Critically analyse the extent to which specific learning environments foster cultural understanding, safety and emotional well-being, positive social interactions, and active engagement and encourage the independence, self-motivation, self-direction, personal empowerment, and self-advocacy of individuals with diverse learning needs
  • Research and apply the influence of historical, global, social and legal factors in shaping the contemporary field of inclusive education with reference to the research literature
  • Critically analyse and synthesise legal and ethical professional practice standards in inclusive education and relevant policies and their implications for students across a range of education settings
  • Research and apply an advanced level of autonomy and specialist judgement to critically evaluate current practice in the light of emerging international trends in inclusive education
