Course overview
In this course, students will develop a deep understanding of concepts about language learning, especially issues concerning learner identity and learner difference in the process of English learning in a TESOL setting. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of language learning as a sociocultural activity and critique issues concerning learner identity in TESOL orientation. Students will apply advanced and scientific knowledge of learners' individual differences in second language acquisition, including the differences in cognition, learning strategies, learning styles, motivation and in language learning errors and variations, to designing, analysing, critiquing and justifying learning activities in a designated TESOL setting.
Course learning outcomes
- Analyse the sociocultural aspects of ESL/EFL/EALD learning, focusing especially on issues about learner identities and language socialisation
- Investigate issues in applying systemic and functional analysis of English in a TESOL classroom
- Examine issues concerning learner differences and their implications for TESOL
- Design learning activities for an intended TESOL classroom through a critical and principled application of selected pedagogies to address identified learner needs
