Course overview
The aim of this course is to enable students to critically reflect on issues concerning Aboriginal education and teaching Aboriginal studies, and to analyse key critical theories of socially just and transformative curricula. Students will reflect critically on Aboriginal languages, histories, social systems and cultures by reviewing the history of Aboriginal education, Aboriginal knowledges and communication, critical theories of education and pedagogy. The students will also review culturally responsive teaching and learning in rural and remote education, classroom management, policy and the politics of Aboriginal education, racism and anti-racist education, Aboriginal and the aim of this course is Torres Strait Islander cultural studies curriculum, and international perspectives on Indigenous education.
Course learning outcomes
- Design and assess strategies for effective engagement with Aboriginal learners in a range of cultural, geographic and linguistic contexts
- Critically evaluate theories and methods of literacy and numeracy acquisition
- Critically examine the history of colonisation and racism, and their impact on Aboriginal education
- Explain the importance of cultural identity, family and community to Aboriginal education
- Develop educational curriculum and practices that includes strategies for learner, family and community engagement
- Evaluate the potential of education to initiate positive personal and social transformation
