Course overview

To advance students' cognitive and communication skills to transmit knowledge and ideas to others, of the genealogy of the evolving role of Islam in contemporary international affairs through the prisms of both Islamic and Western discourses.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the genealogy of the evolving role of Islam in contemporary international affairs
  • Critically assess substantial and critical knowledge of classical and contemporary Islamic paradigms of International Relations
  • Critically analyse the Western International Relations and Area Studies perspectives on the role of Islam in contemporary geopolitics and geo-economics
  • Review the various Islamic discourses and Muslim relationships with the West during the colonial and postcolonial periods
  • Critically analyse the role of Islam as a political identity and Muslims as a political community in shaping the notion of the Ummah (global Muslim community)
