Course overview

This course develops students’ English teaching skills in the areas of multimodal text production and genres.  Students will develop knowledge of text production from a semiotic perspective, inclusive of linguistic and non-linguistic modalities and a range of production technologies. Students will focus on producing texts in a range of genres, including narrative, informational and persuasive genres, using a variety of modes. Students will learn pedagogies for teaching writing and multi-modal text production in diverse classroom contexts, building on knowledge of literacy, language and literature gained in previous English courses. Students will learn to use quality literature and writing processes to support learning about literary and imaginative writing.

  • Describe and critically analyse theoretical perspectives that inform contemporary English teaching in and spoken, written and multimodal text production
  • Apply genre theory to the design and production of multimodal texts
  • Apply detailed knowledge of the language and literary features and patterns of texts to interpret and create texts
  • Design and justify planning and assessment approaches to inform teaching and learning for writing and text production
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding different theoretical perspectives of learner difference and the implications for inclusive teaching of English
  • Apply, justify and demonstrate a range of strategies for designing teaching learning programs for writing and text production
