The aim of this course is for Preservice teachers to examine junior primary aged children's construction of mathematical and science understanding, processes and attitudes and how to implement the inquiry approach to science and mathematics teaching based on the Australian curriculum. Preservice teachers will examine assessment strategies in mathematics and science with an emphasis on prior knowledge, formative assessment and timely and constructive feedback; and plan learning experiences for individuals, small groups and whole classes and evaluate a variety of structured and informal materials, print and digital resources.

Course learning outcomes

  • Examine and apply the theoretical underpinnings of the Early Years Learning Framework and the South Australian Teaching for Effective Learning documents to the planning and teaching of science and mathematics to young children
  • Using the Australian Curriculum, plan, implement, reflect and evaluate a sequence of learning experiences that promote young children's scientific and mathematical understandings
  • Review the use of current technologies and incorporate digital technologies in planning, teaching and evaluation of mathematics and science learning experiences
  • Examine children's disposition to engage mathematically and scientifically through noticing and interpretation
  • Explore ways to assess young children's learning in science and mathematics and utilise information gained through the assessment process to inform the planning of future learning experiences
