Course overview
This course explores pedagogies for working with children from different language backgrounds. It provides an experience in learning an additional language and reflecting on languages learning. Students engage with the Early Years Learning Framework for children in prior to school contexts, and the Australian Curriculum: Languages for children transitioning to school or in the primary years. They experience learning a language, through an introduction to Pitjantjatjara or Italian. They reflect on that experience in the context of learning an additional language, or of using a home or community language, and how this informs their support of all learners in diverse learning contexts.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify the languages and cultures knowledge that children and young people bring to learning sites and schools, and how this is linked to learners’ concepts of self, identity, community and place
- Use strategies and pedagogies of inclusion in plurilingual sites, centres and classrooms
- Use and reflect on their learning and use of basic language concepts in Pitjantjatjara or Italian, and about learning a language for young learners
