Course overview
This course will develop preservice teachers' capacity to plan for and implement student centred learning experiences in middle school mathematics. This course builds preservice teachers' self-reflection to support their personal growth and development as a teacher of mathematics. It unpacks the domains of mathematical knowledge for teaching and the strategies that emphasise teaching for understanding. Working with the mathematics curriculum documents, the preservice teachers will plan learning experiences (including selecting and using resources).
Course learning outcomes
- Select, critique and apply strategies for teaching mathematics in the middle years.
- Critically reflect on personal and professional perspectives of the nature of mathematics taught in school, including in relation to their development as a teacher of mathematics.
- Select, evaluate, and use a range of resources to engage students in learning mathematics.
- Plan and implement learning experiences for particular contexts and purposes, and that align with relevant curriculum frameworks.
- Apply skills of lesson observation and analysis to the teaching of mathematics in the middle years.
