Course overview
This course aims to develop theoretical understandings and equip students with practical methods needed to teach learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) so they can effectively use English in mainstream subjects to access learning areas across the curriculum Students will develop a sound understanding of working with children and young learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous; making content comprehensible to learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD). Sociocultural context of EALD will be introduced through content-based instruction, needs analysis, assessment and reporting in the context of multilingualism. Students will also develop grammar knowledge, both the traditional view and systemic functional grammar approach to improve their subject knowledge in the area of teaching EALD and literacy aligning with the AITSL standards.

- Become aware of the linguistic and cultural diversity in various educational settings
- Appreciate the sociocultural context of EALD, including educational, cultural, historical and inter-group issues
- Understand the importance of grammar knowledge for teaching EALD learners
- Analyse texts to identify cultural and linguistic challenges for learners of English as an additional language
- Describe effectively the features of the English language
- Develop strategies to make content comprehensible to EALD learners
