Course overview

This course will develop an awareness and understanding of the types of disabilities found in children in Junior Primary and Primary schools and special settings and the impact of these disabilities. Preservice teachers will undertake study in the nature of disability; identification and diagnosis, early intervention, Negotiated Education Plans, special education provisions, physical/sensory/health/learning disabilities, instructional/curriculum modifications, school and community support services, parent education and support, and current issues in Special Education.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify the need for early identification, intervention and family support for children with disabilities
  • Describe the characteristics of particular disabilities and the awareness of diagnostic strategies relevant to addressing them
  • Implement care, curriculum and teaching/program modifications for children with disabilities in regular and special settings
  • Critically evaluate the practices which support the successful inclusion of children with disabilities in school settings
  • Discuss the current national and international issues concerning the care and education of children with disabilities
