Course overview
This course aims to ensure students gain knowledge of literature for children, and understand concepts of characterisation, plot, world building, register, genre, representation, context, and multimodality. Students will gain experience in analysing children’s literature in a range of forms, applying their knowledge of key concepts. Students will adopt an inquiry approach to considering children’s responses to literary texts, taking into account the sociocultural diversity of readers.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe and compare the language and literary features of literary texts produced for children
- Explain how social, cultural and personal repertoires influence how literature is read and responded to
- Identify genres and forms of literature produced for children, and considerations for text selection in the classroom
- Review and extend personal preferences and practices in reading children’s literature
