Course overview
This course will deepen mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills in preservice teachers, and to build their capacity to foster a climate of mathematical exploration for all learners. Students will learn and apply strategies for thinking and working mathematically, both for themselves and in planning for learning. They will use a range of techniques to communicate their mathematical thinking and to facilitate mathematical discourse. Students will deepen their appreciation of mathematics as a creative discipline.
Course learning outcomes
- Explore a variety of mathematical approaches for tackling an unfamiliar problem.
- Select and apply mathematical problem-solving strategies.
- Plan developmentally appropriate sequences of learning with an explicit focus on thinking and working mathematically.
- Develop and use a repertoire of communication techniques to convey their own mathematical thinking and reasoning.
- Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse for all learners.
- Critically reflect on their own development as both doers and teachers of mathematics.

If you are an international student, or a domestic student studying in a full fee paying place, and are continuing study that you commenced in 2025 or earlier, your fees will be available here before enrolments open for 2026.
