Course overview

This course will deepen mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills in preservice teachers, and to build their capacity to foster a climate of mathematical exploration for all learners. Students will learn and apply strategies for thinking and working mathematically, both for themselves and in planning for learning. They will use a range of techniques to communicate their mathematical thinking and to facilitate mathematical discourse. Students will deepen their appreciation of mathematics as a creative discipline.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explore a variety of mathematical approaches for tackling an unfamiliar problem.
  • Select and apply mathematical problem-solving strategies.
  • Plan developmentally appropriate sequences of learning with an explicit focus on thinking and working mathematically.
  • Develop and use a repertoire of communication techniques to convey their own mathematical thinking and reasoning.
  • Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse for all learners.
  • Critically reflect on their own development as both doers and teachers of mathematics.
