Course overview
In this course, students will develop a critical understanding of the nature, content, practices and theories of the English curriculum and English teaching in senior schools. Preservice teachers will learn about the content of the Australian Curriculum for English at secondary level and the content and requirements of SACE English courses. They will become acquainted with the theories, principles, methods and pedagogical approaches for integrating reading, writing, speaking and listening throughout the secondary English curriculum. Preservice teachers will engage and become familiar with a wide range of text types, genres and literature appropriate for the study of English at secondary level. They will focus and reflect on key aspects of their professional practice as secondary English teachers. Preservice teachers will bring together theory and practice to design a curriculum program and consider the role of assessment.

- Plan, develop and deliver short teaching sequences
- Reflect on their developing teaching practice
- Explain and discuss the scope of the secondary English curriculum
- Critically analyse concepts and theories of teaching, learning and assessment, and apply them to the development of a curriculum unit
- Explain and justify a curriculum unit they have designed for secondary English
