Course overview

This course will further develop preservice teachers' understanding and practical methods to inform decision making in planning, teaching, resource selection, adaptation and design, and assessing English as an Additional Language (EAL). Preservice teachers will further develop their understanding of the features of TESOL settings, the factors affecting TESOL and the teacher agency in TESOL. They will also develop practical methods of teaching EAL/D including the implementation of the communicative approach, explicit teaching of grammar through different genres and connections with other areas of learning. Preservice teachers will learn to evaluate, select and adapt language learning activities, resources and assessment practices to help create lesson plans and units of work.

  • Effectively explain the features of the English language
  • Employ appropriate strategies for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL)
  • Use linguistic analyses to inform decisions about planning, teaching and assessing English language learning
  • Explain the rationales for decisions relating to activity design, resource selection, lesson and unit planning, methods and assessment
  • Evaluate lessons and units of work in EAL
  • Design lessons and units of work in EAL
