Course overview

This course will introduce preservice teachers to the pedagogical concept of STEM in education and develop an understanding of cross discipline planning as they engage in project based learning opportunities. Preservice teachers will investigate the benefits and complexities of adopting STEM as a pedagogical approach to teaching Science, Technology, and Mathematics in the Junior Primary/Primary classroom. Preservice teachers will have the opportunity to collaboratively design and produce teaching and learning resources to support the effective teaching of STEM.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify, plan and teach each aspect of STEM through project based inquiry
  • Articulate a stance on project based pedagogy that is informed by current curriculum debates and research
  • Develop the capacity to work with colleagues to plan for, to evaluate and to improve teaching and learning through STEM education
  • Organise and manage materials and equipment in a safe and gender inclusive ways required for teaching and learning in STEM
