Course overview
The aim of this course is for preservice teachers to further develop their pedagogical content knowledge for primary mathematics in the areas of measurement and geometry. This course engages preservice teachers with mathematical knowledge and digital technologies for mathematics education with particular focus on measurement and geometry. Preservice teachers will examine current practices in mathematics intervention and explore methods of building conceptual development of mathematical content for primary students. Timely scaffolding for learners with special needs and enhanced learning experiences for advanced preservice teachers in mathematics will be explored.
Course learning outcomes
- Design a sequence of mathematical learning experience which reflect constructivist practices to develop learners understanding of probability and statistics.
- Critique the role of digital technologies in mathematical teaching and learning.
- Critically evaluate recognised diagnostic tools for measuring mathematical understanding.
- Communicate mathematically through the processes of problem solving, reasoning, verifying, reflecting and applying.
- Plan strategies for working with children well below/ well above the achievement standard for their year level.
