Course overview
This course will develop a deep, conceptual and foundational content knowledge in geographical studies through exploring the content and skills of the Australian Curriculum: Geography. To develop the capacity to think geographically through geographical concepts and key content areas that underpin the geography curriculum. Inquiry and research skills will also be honed to support the teaching of engaging, critical and creative geography in the primary school setting. Students will study units of work that will provide deep understanding of the child as a geographer through geographical thinking. They will also explore the major content areas and geographical processes pertinent to teaching children from birth to Year 7. To do this students will develop spatial and practical mapping skills, conduct fieldwork using inquiry methodology and interpret the achievement standards and quality task design.

- Proficiency in the geographical skills of spatial analysis and mapping

- An understanding of the pedagogical content knowledge involved in the teaching of geography
- Ability to develop quality assessment design based on an understanding of the link between the achievement standards and the content taught
- Capacity to undertake quality geographical fieldwork
- Awareness of the resources available for quality geographical learning and program design
