Course overview
In this course, students will develop deep understanding of traditional, contemporary and emerging arts content and practices, their application to the curriculum and the role/s of a generalist primary school teacher with an arts curriculum specialisation. Students will investigate the presence and creative contribution of the arts (dance, drama, media arts, music and visual arts) to diverse contemporary audio-visual cultures. With a focus on visual and media arts knowledge and practices, students will audit, document and critically reflect on developing specialist arts subject content knowledge and the requirements of an inclusive primary school arts curriculum entitlement. Pedagogical approaches will focus on creative body-based learning in physical, digital and virtual spaces.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of the arts in diverse contemporary communities and their impact upon young people
- Identify traditional and contemporary approaches to the arts in curriculum decision making and research
- Experience creative body-based learning in physical, digital and virtual spaces
- Apply current approaches to technology in working with digital and media arts
- Identify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts as intrinsic to Australian cultural knowledge, understanding and communication
- Articulate the intrinsic and instrumental value of dance, drama, music, media and visual arts in the school curriculum
- Demonstrate reflective practice in working as an active teacher/artist educator with young people
