Course overview
The course is designed to build deep understanding of the local and global economic importance of the services sector, with a strong focus on the role of services in international trade and investment flows and the movement of natural persons. Close attention is given to international governance for services, in the WTO and in other multilateral organisations and to trends in services governance in a variety of regional, bilateral and plurilateral intergovernmental agreements. The course examines the role of services in global and regional value chains, in e-commerce and in transformation towards the digital economy. It also specifically examines the role services and services trade can play in assisting with the economic growth and development of emerging and developing economies.

Course learning outcomes
- Analyse the fundamental principles and significance of services trade within the global economy, and critically evaluate its role in shaping global value chains and promoting economic development
- Examine the governance and regulatory aspects of services trade through the World Trade Organization (WTO), including the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and the Joint Statement Initiative on e-commerce and digital trade
- Evaluate the frameworks and impacts of regional and bilateral services trade agreements, with a focus on comparative analysis of major regional agreements and their implications for services trade
- Utilise quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyse services trade issues, and conduct research on the impact of trade policies on the services sector
- Identify ongoing challenges and future directions in domestic services regulation
