Course overview
This course examines the rules, policy, and economic realities governing international trade in agriculture and food, including recent developments, disputes, agreements, and disruptions. Topics include key agricultural policy models, the role of intergovernmental organisations, global value chains, the growing impact on trade of private standards, and food insecurity. It also covers the recent transformation in markets and methods as retailers have gained a greater influence over production and distribution decisions.

Course learning outcomes
- Explain different national models for agricultural production and trade.
- Identify and analyse the impacts of agricultural trade policies and policy instruments.
- Evaluate the role and impact of regional trade agreements, sustainability standards, and climate measures on agricultural trade flows and market opportunities.
- Apply value chain analysis to specific sectoral contexts to help explain export flows.
- Analyse contemporary challenges, including geopolitical tensions and trade disputes, and their effects on global agricultural supply chains, trade patterns, and distribution systems.
