Course overview
This course is concerned with the relationship between trade and economic development, with specific regard to trade policies. It provides an overview of how trade can contribute to economic growth when framed by the appropriate domestic and international policies and measures. It analyses the trade and economic policies in East Asia, ASEAN and other selected developing countries. Development related issues such as alignment of industrial and trade policies, behind border issues and trade and investment facilitation are presented and discussed.

Course learning outcomes
- Analyse key international trade theories and models and their role in global economic growth
- Identify how trade policies affect development in different regions, especially in East Asia, ASEAN, and developing countries
- Evaluate how free trade agreements and regional integration impact the world's trade system and their role in boosting economic development
- Explore current global trade issues, such as the impact of pandemics, geopolitical changes, and digital advances, and assess their future effects on trade and development
- Use trade research methods to analyse trade policies and their effects on economic development
