Course overview
The aim of this course is to provide students with an introduction to empirical methods that are widely used in the analysis of business data and in business research, and to extend their understanding of the rationale for use of such techniques and their limitations. Introduction of statistical analysis and techniques required in cross-sectional and time-series modelling. The application and limitations of techniques used in the analysis of data. Regression modelling techniques: concepts, applications, interpretation, and limitations. Use of appropriate computer software. Alternative methods of reporting and using analytical results.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify situations arising in business to which empirical methods, including regression analysis, may be applied.
- Identify decision making criteria and processes required in the choice, construction and evaluation of regression models suited to business analysis.
- Formulate requirements for the ethical and objective analysis of empirical information derived from alternative sources of data.
- Proficiency in performing the computational analysis of cross-sectional and time series data using common software.
- Interpret and report the results of empirical business analyses in both technical and lay terms.
- Demonstrate UniSA Business Enterprise Skills in the context of Economics: i) Problem Solving (intermediate level); ii) Ethical Awareness (intermediate level) and iii) Written Communication (intermediate level).
