Course overview

Provide students with tools and background knowledge to understand the global mining and energy sector, including its current and historic role in economic development and social advancement.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand the concept of ‘Georesources’ encompassing any part of the natural Earth system being used by humans for economic or social advancement (minerals, hydrocarbons, soils, water, renewable energy)
  • Describe how each broad class of Georesource is a consequence and/or manifestation of global-scale Earth processes and appreciate how Georesources (and the processes responsible for them) scale across time and space
  • Understand the role of Georesources in shaping human history, economic and social advancement
  • Assess the project-scale economics of various Georesources from a triple-bottom-line perspective (economic, social and environmental) to inform optimisation and prioritisation of land use
  • Communicate complex Georesource issues to a broad audience
