Course overview

This course uses theories, contemporary research and evidence to examine how offending behaviour, and experiences of victimisation and the criminal justice system may be impacted by gender, gender identity and sexual orientation. This course explores how variations of gender identity and sexual orientation impact on social perceptions, legal access and criminal justice responses to both perpetrators and victims of crime.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify relevant human rights and anti-discrimination laws and principles that promote access and equity for all engaged in criminal justice processes.
  • Examine and explain how gender, gender identity and sexual orientation influence legal and social responses to victims and offenders of crime.
  • Examine the significance of gender, gender identification and sexual orientation in influencing criminal justice outcomes.
  • Identify and apply good practice principles and professional skills and practices to promote equity and access for offenders and victims engaged in criminal justice processes.
