Course overview
This course aims to develop students’ knowledge of the nature, extent and impact of victimisation, key approaches and theories in victimology, and responses to victims of crime from the criminal justice system, and society more broadly. The course encourages students to think critically and reflectively about victimisation and trauma. It teaches a trauma-informed response and rights-based approach to crime victims and incorporates industry partnerships in victim support and restorative justice.
Course learning outcomes
- Analyse the limitations of data in capturing the complexity of victimisation according to demography and crime type
- Discuss the impact of crime on victims using a sensitive, reflective and trauma informed approach
- Apply key victimological theories to explain different types of offending and victim’s experiences of crime
- Advocate for victims’ rights drawing on the relevant national and international frameworks and best practice models
- Evaluate criminal justice responses to crime through a victim centred lens
