Course overview

This course provides an introduction to the principles, approaches and methods of criminal investigation. Students will examine the methods of collecting evidence and the application of intelligence processes supporting criminal investigations. Students will evaluate police accountability mechanisms that influence policing transparency, integrity and public trust. This course examines criminal investigation principles and approaches; crime scene identification, preservation and examination; police approaches to search, seizure and the maintenance of evidence for exhibit purposes. Students will apply strategic thinking and intelligence analysis in the application of intelligence processes to support criminal investigations. Students will critically evaluate the ethical and privacy considerations that arise from technological innovations in crime investigations and forensic analysis.
