Course overview

This course will develop students' knowledge of interaction design and usability focusing on research, analysis and evaluation methods as well as developing knowledge of design principles and heuristics for user centered design. The students will develop knowledge of the principles and methods for usability and interaction design. Students will develop skills in user-centered research, design development and product evaluation used in practice to make products practical and easy to use. In addition students will develop high levels of expertise and skill in design simulation, development and communication via text, oral presentations, three-dimensional model making, CAD, hand drawing and graphic presentations.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of design for usability concepts and principles used in the design of products and systems.
  • Plan a qualitative design research project,using a variety of methods and approaches in the context of design for usability.
  • Conduct qualitative user research for the purposes of product design with consideration of ethical issues for user centred research.
  • Analyse qualitative information from basic user research to develop insights and design proposals.
  • Propose design solutions to design for usability and user experience design problems based on the outcomes of qualitative research.
  • Develop a range of communication methods to communicate design for usability and user experience concepts to users, design professionals and clients.
