Course overview

This course aims to develop in students an advanced understanding of some of the most important concepts, theories and ideas in media and communication studies. Building on the first-year course, Key Concepts in Media and Communication, concepts and theories will be related to existing cultural, social and political systems, patterns, issues and debates. Students will develop the tools to apply concepts and theories to some of the most pressing issues, tensions and questions facing the field of media and communication today.  

Course learning outcomes

  • demonstrate an advanced and detailed understanding of key media and communication theories and concepts
  • Apply advanced concepts and theories to current problems, issues and debates related to the role of media and communication in social, cultural and political life.
  • use an advanced understanding of concepts and theories to develop an informed argument for the role of media and communication in society today
  • use theory and concepts to critically reflect on media and communication policies, values, professional norms, and other related issues across a range of sectors
