Course overview

This course introduces the principal elements of cyber security from an organisational and technical perspective. The aim of the course is to provide students with the foundational knowledge to recognise potential threats and countermeasures and understand the terminology used in the cyber security field. 

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the human, physical, technical and organisational factors impacting security
  • Describe the contemporary security threat landscape (threat actors, nation state)
  • Identify key security principles including confidentiality, reliability, and authentication
  • Identify technical vulnerabilities
  • Explain the architecture and application of digital signatures including secure email, public key and asymmetric key
  • Identify counter-measures including mitigation approaches and accepting for a given scenario
