Course overview

This course will develop students' written and oral communication skills in a professional context using a wide range of professional and technical texts, and to develop students' skills in planning, drafting, evaluating, and editing written, oral and visual communication content. Students will gain specialist skills and knowledge in professional and technical writing skills; professional presentations; effective communication within the workplace; and theories of communication using the principles of reader-centredness, useability and persuasiveness.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically analyse professional literature and synthesize key concepts and contributions.
  • Develop an advanced understanding of theories of communication through the principles of reader-centredness, useability and persuasiveness.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Consider issues relating to ethics, international perspectives, and cultural diversity, and apply professional judgement for effective communication.
