Course overview
The aim of this course is to further develop students' understanding on how our identities are produced and maintained through the interplay between language and culture. In this course students will investigate the central importance of language to the formation of people's identities (personal, social and professional) through a range of scholarly, literary and artistic sources. They will examine key ideas in theories of identity in the context of linguistic diversity. These include identity as membership, as narrative, as difference, as history and memory, as performance and as institutional.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which language and culture shape perceptions of identity
- Demonstrate an understanding of how people's identities are created and challenged in interaction
- Analyse the role of language, including narratives, in creating and sustaining identity
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of film, print and electronic media in shaping identities
- Investigate, reflect on and report on how people's identities are constructed and negotiated in particular social and professional contexts
