Course overview

The aim of this course is to further develop students' understanding on how our identities are produced and maintained through the interplay between language and culture. In this course students will investigate the central importance of language to the formation of people's identities (personal, social and professional) through a range of scholarly, literary and artistic sources. They will examine key ideas in theories of identity in the context of linguistic diversity. These include identity as membership, as narrative, as difference, as history and memory, as performance and as institutional.
