Course overview
This course will develop students' awareness, understanding and use of English in spoken and written language in different contexts. The course focuses on word form and order; clause and sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and proofreading. Students are taught critical reading strategies which enable them to develop an understanding of how language is applied and constructed for different text types. Students are taught how to evaluate information sources and how to write in an academic register for developing argumentative paragraphs. Students will participate in a range of communicative group activities and be taught oral presentation skills.

- Demonstrate an understanding and application of grammatical concepts and structures in English in different text types
- Develop critical thinking and analysis skills to comprehend, evaluate, and critique various texts, including written and spoken content
- Construct academic sentence and paragraph writing incorporating academic conventions including paraphrasing, summarising and APA referencing style
- Demonstrate an understanding to critically evaluate and organise information to support a written argument
- Verbally present a comprehensive analysis of students' writing development, highlighting the progress made through editing practice and incorporating feedback received throughout the duration of the course
- Use information and digital literacy strategies to evaluate sources
- Implement ethical and responsible academic conduct according to university guidelines and standards
