Course overview

Students undertaking the Visual Effects Placement: Compositing and Tracking course will be provided with a unique full time 12 week media placement on location with industry partner Rising Sun Pictures. This immersive full semester placement will build upon students' existing media arts knowledge and on completion of this course, they will be able to demonstrate advanced visual effects techniques including how to create 3D visual effects and develop skills in compositing, plate preparation, rotoscoping and 3D tracking. Students will also develop a completed showreel and resume in addition to gaining practical hands on experience with industry mentoring. This full semester course familiarises students with professional practice in the visual effects industry, and provides the theory, skills and techniques to produce industry-standard visual effects based film sequences. The course will provide students with hands-on training in core skills required by entry-level visual effects artists including camera tracking, compositing, rotoscoping, plate preparation, paint and 2D tracking to produce production-standard matchmoves. Students will build experience in using industry-standard tools such as Nuke, 3DEqualizer, Maya and Shotgun. Students will gain practical insights into career strategies and employment prospects locally, nationally and internationally. Students will be exposed to professional standards, through immersive learning in a production studio, and using industry standard software under the supervision of experienced visual effects artists. Upon completion of this course, students will have developed a clear understanding of professional practice in the visual effects industry, and will be employable on a global scale, equipped with a unique and sought after skill set. Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of production company operations including management, workflows, legal and ethical concerns and client directed project work
  • Identify, plan and select the appropriate combinations of techniques to undertake a variety of compositing and tracking tasks
  • Demonstrate the ability to work individually and collaborate with small teams to produce industry-standard visual effects-based image sequences and matchmove shots using advanced compositing and tracking skills
  • Demonstrate advanced skills in visual effects compositing and tracking software packages to deliver industry-standard artefacts
  • Plan and efficiently manage a program of work within a larger project to meet a production brief within agreed timelines
  • Utilise developed reflection and critical evaluation skills to review the placement experience and aid personal development in the media arts industry environment
