Course overview
In this course, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in both theory-focussed workshops and practical based laboratory activities, in addition to technical laboratory and computational skills, focussing on developing a deep understanding of core aspects of physical chemistry.
Course learning outcomes
- Apply knowledge of advanced quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and kinetics, and electronic and nuclear spectroscopy to conceptual and quantitative problems
- Evaluate the appropriateness of different computational techniques and numerical approximations for solving physical chemistry problems
- Demonstrate proficiency in accurately representing chemical structures, formulae and equations
- Demonstrate proficiency in undertaking individual and/or team-based measurement-based laboratory investigations using appropriate apparatus, techniques and safe laboratory practices
- Analyse, interpret and present the results of measurement-based laboratory experiments
- Communicate results of laboratory experiment in written scientific reports and/or oral presentations
