Course overview
The course aims to provide students with a strong foundation of chemistry concepts that would be required for future studies in chemistry and chemistry-related fields, including biological, health and nutrition sciences. Building on prior courses, learners will expand their knowledge of acids and bases, chemical thermodynamics and its relationship to equilibrium, redox processes and electrochemistry. In addition, learners will be introduced to core concepts of reaction kinetics and will be able to identify stereoisomers, explain addition and substitution reactions and devise synthetic routes to synthesize novel materials and biomolecules. Examples of the application of chemical concepts to real-world scenarios will be provided throughout the course.
Course learning outcomes
- Apply knowledge of fundamental concepts of energy and equilibrium, acids and bases, kinetics and electrochemistry, and organic chemistry to solve quantitative and conceptual chemistry problems
- Demonstrate proficiency in accurately representing chemical structures, formulae, equations and reaction mechanism
- Interpret, record and present results of laboratory experiments conducted using safe laboratory practices
