Course overview

This course will ensure advanced understanding of the complexities and importance of ethics in the context of the demanding business environment associated with the provision of financial advice. The course aims to embed ethical awareness and management of ethical issues in professional providers of financial advice, including the importance of professional codes of ethics and conduct to their practice. Professions and professionalism; ethical frameworks and decision-making; professions and professional ethical codes; regulatory environment and fiduciary relationships and duties; client identification and best interest duty; client engagement and relationships, conflicts of interest and their management; consent and resolution of associated ethical problems; good faith and due diligence and remuneration as an ethical challenge.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply the key professional responsibilities placed on a financial advisor by regulatory requirements.
  • Explain the importance of ethical codes to the provision of financial advice, including the values that underpin the relevant codes.
  • Examine expectations regarding client engagement, client relationships and decision making.
  • Ascertain the variety and forms of compliance and regulatory regimes affecting the provision of financial advice.
  • Analyse the strategic, leadership and global issues impacting the financial advice professions.
  • Critically reflect on the nature, role and importance of professional communication and skills in the provision of financial advice.
  • Demonstrate UniSA Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Financial Planning discipline: i) Self Management (advanced level); ii) Ethical Awareness (advanced level) and iii) International Perspective (advanced level).
