Course overview

This course will provide a broad understanding of the contemporary importance of sport tourism. A critical analysis will be made of resource needs, markets and impacts that influence the planning and development of sport tourism events. Special interest tourism; the sport-tourism relationship; the evolution and development of sport event tourism; sport tourism demand and supply; economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts of sport tourism events; sport event tourism markets; the sport event tourism experience; case studies of sport tourism events.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically analyse the contemporary significance of sport tourism.
  • Investigate the relationship between the resource base and sport tourism development.
  • Appraise and evaluate the significance of scale, timing and setting in the management of sport tourism events.
  • Evaluate the role played by different stakeholders in event planning.
  • Critically compare alternative approaches to the design of sport tourism events.
  • Research and evaluate the factors shaping recent trends in sport tourism and events.
  • Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Tourism and Event Management discipline: i) Problem Solving (advanced level); and ii) Written Communication (advanced level).
