Course overview
The course explores different dimensions of culture and how these dimensions can differentiate one culture from another. The course also considers cultural impacts in the workplace in areas such as communication, negotiation, values and ethical conduct, and provides a greater understanding of why people behave as they do and how this behaviour affects business. Management is considered in global and cross-cultural environments through contemporary management and leadership theories and practices. The aim of this course is topics covered in this course: Globalisation, convergence vs divergence; external environments of management, analysis and models; dimensions of inter-cultural differences; theories and models of national culture; management systems; leadership and organisational culture in the international context; cultural and social intelligence; organising and recruitment in the international context; motivation, people and behaviours across cultures; ethics and governance; negotiation and conflict management across cultures; controlling and performance management; organisational strategy in the international context.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically reflect on, theoretical and practice-based principles of the role and impact of culture and cultural diversity on management decision making.
- Critically assess and evaluate different dimensions of culture, how these dimensions can differentiate one culture from another, their impact in the workplace in areas such as communication, negotiation, values and ethical conduct, and how they affect individual behaviour and business.
- Apply principles of culture and cultural diversity theory to organisational management in international business settings.
- Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills: International Perspective (foundation level).
