Course overview
This course provides students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to strategic thinking, strategy development, and executive leadership to manage people and organisational change. Upon completing this course, students will demonstrate principles and methods of evidence-based executive decision-making and effective strategy formulation for improved impact on business processes, human capital, and organisational growth. Strategic management models and concepts: strategic analysis; competitive advantage; putting strategy into action; strategy in defence and space industries, the government sector, and not-for-profits.
Executive leadership and people management: Management evidence on leadership effectiveness; team dynamics; team leadership; hierarchy, organisational structures and cultural change.
Course learning outcomes
- Develop the ability to effectively lead and manage global teams in the defence and space sector, including understanding the unique challenges and opportunities associated with cross-border collaboration.
- Enhance communication skills necessary for successful collaboration within and between teams in different cultural and institutional contexts, including the ability to listen actively, persuade and negotiate with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Build an understanding of the importance of adaptability, flexibility, and agility in managing complex projects in the defence and space sector, including the ability to handle uncertainty, manage risk and make informed decisions.
- Manage organisational change, including visioning, stakeholder consultations, and implementing strategic change initiatives. Integrate knowledge across the national and international defence policies, including the role of military alliances, arms control, and international security.
- Develop a deep understanding of the ethical, legal and social implications of leading global teams in the defence and space sector, including the ability to identify address ethical issues in the defence and space sectors, and ethical dilemmas related to cultural differences, power dynamics, and social responsibility in a global context.
