Course overview
The aim of this course is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the history, stakeholders and their inter-relationships, laws and current practices in industrial relations in Australia. Theoretical explanations of patterns, practices and institutions of industrial relations; evolution of relevant institutions; management strategy; employee organisation, strategy and behaviour; institutions and practices of workplace regulation; arbitration, enterprise bargaining, individual employment contracts and the mechanisms used to create enforceable industrial instruments; historical, economic, political and social context of industrial relations.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify, evaluate, organise, and present relevant information to foster understanding of industrial relations matters.
- Apply specialist knowledge to real-life scenarios for the resolution of issues pertaining to industrial relations and the provision of strategic advice.
- Communicate clearly and effectively on matters related to industrial relations with a variety of audiences ranging from area specialists to lay persons.
- Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Human Resource Management discipline: i) Problem Solving (advanced level); and ii) Written Communication (intermediate level).
