Course overview
In this highly interactive course, students will develop a working knowledge of the design thinking methodology and numerous supporting frameworks, tools and techniques by applying human-centred processes to dissect project ideas into component parts, to redefine problems, generate ideas, and prioritise those ideas to develop and test a prototype to achieve optimal innovative solutions. Students will then assess steps to implement the solution through change management principles, and consider ways to monitor the anticipated impact achieved or whether further iteration is required. Working manually through these processes will help students to develop the skills to critically think through complex problems and conceive numerous innovative options as solutions.
Course learning outcomes
- Understand and interpret design thinking theories, concepts and processes
- Identify the relationship between design thinking, innovation and entrepreneurship and the value of innovation to organisations, economies and society
- Demonstrate the ability to formulate and apply the basic elements of human-centred design; empathetic research and analysis, problem definition, idea generation, prototyping, evaluation and iteration
- Demonstrate team collaboration and strategies to address potential problems/conflicts that occur when working in teams
- Identify and apply ethical principles in the design process
