Course overview
The course aims to equip students with a broad knowledge of how the law impacts business decision-making and operations, and the range of obligations placed on business. In addition to meeting professional body and legislative requirements, learners are equipped with the knowledge and practical skills they need to ensure that they are able to comply with Australia's legal and regulatory regimes. The course achieves these outcomes by examining a number of fundamental legal principles that facilitate yet impinge upon business and professional activities and facilitating critical reflection upon the strengths and weaknesses of Australia's legal and regulatory regimes.
Course learning outcomes
- Discuss key features of the Australian legal system and tort and contract law, including major institutions and sources of laws and regulation
- Discuss and demonstrate the application of case law to interpret legislation
- Identify and explain the major aspects of corporations, contract, property, consumer protection, competition, privacy, and anti-money laundering introduced in the course
- Identify how different business organisations are formed and operate and compare and contrast their significant features
- Prepare reasonably argued positions to justify application of legislation and case law to factual scenarios, particularly with respect to topics covered in the syllabus
- Evaluate policy issues underpinning the regulation of business and corporations through consumer protection, competition, privacy, and anti-money laundering laws
