Course overview

This course will develop students' specialised knowledge of materials and technologies required for the design, detail, documentation, and fabrication of buildings of varying scales and complexities. Students will develop an advanced understanding of the skills and knowledge necessary to translate design concepts into built-form, and the necessary application of workshop processes and safety requirements, including equipment use, care, and maintenance. Through the exploration of building systems and materials students will develop design details and skills of increasing complexity in workshop operations, including the use of hand and power tools for building component preparation and assembly.

Course learning outcomes

  • use hand and power tools for building construction
  • resolve building details for construction of increasing complexity
  • evaluate and determine appropriate assembly techniques of increasing complexity
  • assemble and fabricate materials and building components of increasing complexity
  • identify and implement safe work practices for workshop fabrication
