Course overview

This course will develop students' knowledge of active and passive environmental control and servicing systems and their application in buildings of medium-to-large scale and complexity. Students will develop knowledge of the definitions, terms, and principles applied to active, passive, and hybrid environmental control and servicing systems in buildings of a medium-to-large scale and complexity. Students will develop skills in analysing thermal comfort, characteristics of healthy buildings, legislative requirements for built environments, and apply strategies to integrate architectural design with lighting, acoustics, fire, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.

Course learning outcomes

  • Develop knowledge of active and passive environmental systems, including for thermal comfort, lighting, and for conceptual and schematic design
  • Critically evaluate the built environment in the context of sustainable development and incorporate intermediate-level sustainable design strategies and technologies
  • Identify, assess, and incorporate appropriate regulatory standards, codes, and legislative requirements to the design of buildings of a variety of scales and complexity
