Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the study of buildings under load, the analysis of simple structures. This includes distinguishing between different types of loads and describing different types of structural members. Mathematical methods. Introduction to elementary stability theories, building loads, structural systems, principal components, forces and stresses. Behaviour and analysis of beam, truss and column. Bending, shear, deflection, bearing and stability. Introduction to: equilibrium, structural analysis software, structural property of steel.

Course learning outcomes

  • Select and apply mathematical procedures to determine forces acting on structures and determine costs and use this to justify design decisions.
  • Analyse and design physical structures and representations of structures to allow the calculation of support reactions, shear forces, bending moments and deflections.
  • Describe, predict and think critically about the behaviour of simple structures under load.
  • Review, select and integrate relevant literature to determine and articulate the limitations and applications of structural concepts using professional conventions.
  • Communicate structural concepts through mathematics, drawings, photographs, videos, written reports and verbal presentations.
