Course overview

This course will introduce students to the general principles of microbiology and to provide a basis for the further studies in clinical microbiology and molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Microbial diversity: prokaryotes, eukaryotes, viruses. Microbial genetics, physiology and ecology: replication, metabolism, life cycles, cell-cell communication, biofilms, ecosystems. Human-microbe interactions: the human microbiome, infectious disease, pathogenicity and virulence. Impact of Microorganisms: harnessing microbes and their products. Microbial growth control: sterilisation, chemical disinfection and antisepsis. Antimicrobials: antibiotic structure and targets, susceptibility testing, antibiotic resistance.

Course learning outcomes

  • Develop a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of the diversity of microbial life forms and activities.
  • Discuss the role of micro-organisms in infectious disease and the action of the main classes of antimicrobials.
  • Culture and describe microorganisms, enumerate and control their growth.
  • Apply knowledge to collaboratively investigate, describe and solve microbiological problems.
